I always sought very emotionally close relationships and, not finding them in a large group, kept to my own separate corner. Perhaps the reason for my childhood aloofness was exactly that. I idealized relationships and people and lived in my own inner world, paying more attention to how events resonated within me rather than to the role I played in them. The most effective thing at that age, in my opinion, is to properly “ground” the child and build genuinely close emotional relationships with them, so that they don’t close themselves off.
